CEF AWARDS $64,844+ IN TEACHING GRANTSMay 30, 2014
On Friday, May 30, the Corsicana Education Foundation awarded $64,844 through 19 Innovative Teaching Grants to Corsicana ISD students and teachers. Usually, CEF awards grants in August during staff convocation, but this year they loaded a bus with the CHS drum line and large checks to give the surprise of the year. Through donations, CEF has given over $1 million to programs that support CISD students since 2002. CEF has been awarding grants since 2003, and this was the 2nd largest grant award cycle in their history. (In 2004, they gave over $66,000.) |

Carroll Elementary General Store - $1,200.00 Casey Gordon and Tammy Casaday Carroll Elementary 3rd Grade, Math This grant exposes students to real-world math, as they run a general store with basic school supplies. Construction Technology Partnership with Local Industry - $2,280.00 Bill Crawford CHS 9th-12th, Construction Technology and Advanced Construction The CHS Construction Technology Class will be making wedges used in local construction to integrate classroom productivity with the local business industry. They will be selling the wedges, and already have a buyer, which will maintain the program for years to come. Read on! - $1,500.00 Kimi Muldner and Danielle Davis CHS 11th, English Previously awarded by CEF several years ago, this grant purchases contemporary literary works that high school students use in inquiry-based project learning. Students loved the books so much, they were stealing them to keep, so this grant will replenish the book supply. Teach the Future - $1,500.00 Stephanie Bristol and Misty Fletes CHS 10th, English Sophomore English classes expressed a interest in studying World War II and the Holocaust, and this grant will provide new novels that peak their interest as they study. Aviation ground school, flight simulator and teaching aids - $1,298.00 Frank M. DeArmond and Monte Mackey CHS 10th-12th, Aviation Private Pilot Ground School A flight simulator will be a new addition to CHS next year through this grant. Achieving Success in the Community - $3,500.00 Kelsey Whiteley, Michael Usery, Niece Hansen, Lissie O'Neal, Laurie Denbow, Elmer Avellaneda and Lisa West CHS 9th-12th, Special Education The CHS Special Education Department will be purchasing modules to help train students in vocational and career preparation. TI NSpire Calculator App - $4,799.00 Serena Wright-Bostic CHS 9th-10th, Algebra Many students struggle with math and cannot afford a T1 calculator, but through the purchase of the T1 app, all students will have access to the calculator through their mobile devices. Theatre Camp - $1,800.00 Gloria McLuckie CHS 9th-12th, Theatre Arts The CHS One-Act Play team just placed 3rd in state, and have expressed interest to send students to a theatre camp this summer to hone their skills. Bringing Dance and Technology Together - $3,565.00 Amy Tidwell CHS and CMS 8th-12th, Dance 1-4, Dance Production, Dance Company Management This grant will expand dance to Collins Middle School, and allow students to learn about analyzing dance movements, editing music, and work in smaller group settings. Soloists and Technology – A Match Made in Harmony - $3,784.00 Bre Osbourn, Jeff Osburn, Brandon Nelson, and Curtis Oakley CHS, CMS, Drane 6th-12th, Band Because the cost of a piano accompaniment can be expensive, most of our band students only compete in ensemble competitions at the state level. This year, they took more than 40 students to state. This grant will provide laptops and electronic piano accompaniment, allowing student to complete in solo competition. |
Ag Mechanics with Core Classes “One of a Kind” - $4,575.00 Larry Acock, Jennifer Sutton, Jennifer Cabano, Tracey Daniels, and Alissa Preston-Prince Collins Middle 7th-8th, English, Math, Science, Technology, and Ag Mechanics The award-winning CMS Ag Mechanics team will build an observation deck next year while integrating lessons from various academic areas and help from local business professionals. Let Your Light Shine! - $9,012.00 Gloria McLuckie, Blade Healey, Amy Tidwell, Bre Osbourn, and Mike Huffstetler District Wide K-12th, Theatre Arts, Dance, Music, Choir This grant will provide a new lighting system for the CHS auditorium, benefiting all students, staff and the community. S.M.A.R.T. (Sensory-Motor Activities, Resources, and Training) - $6,203.00 Jennifer Ford, Jennifer Mann, and Jennifer Nelson District Wide EE-12th, All Subjects The CISD Special Education Department will be creating sensory motor development laboratory next year for all students. The lab helps students with behavioral and academic difficulties related to sensory-motor integration. Light Up Math- II - $2,600.00 Dee Haffner and Math Department Drane 6th, Math For the 2nd year, Drane will host approximately 100 students at a week-long summer math camp. The camp targets students who need to improve their math skills. Last summer, students saw a 76% increase in math scores from pre-test to post-test. Biltz-Perot Museum Grant - $6,000.00 Science Dept. Drane 6th, Science CEF has committed to sending every CISD 6th grade student to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science for 5 years. This is the 2nd year of the grant. Last year, it took 10 busses, included 2 wheel chair accessible, and a box truck full of sack lunches to send over 400 students and 60 chaperones to the museum. Admission to the museum, ticket to a 3D science movie, lunch and transportation were all covered by CEF funds. Taking It to the Streets! - $2,478.00 Cindy McCary Fannin Elementary K-5th, Music Fannin will be able to purchase a keyboard that is portable, allowing for more music performance in the community and replacing an outdated piano. STEMulating Learning In An Outdoor Environment - $4,500.00 Cheryl Pratt and Patti Smith Fannin Elementary K-5th, Science, Math, Reading, Literature, Writing, Health, Social Studies, Gifted & Talented, Special Education. Next year, Fannin will have an outdoor classroom with different materials and manipulatives that can be used in lessons across all grade levels and subjects. Count Around the “Can” (CorsiCANa)-Get on the Fast Track, Phase II - $3,500.00 Cheryl Pratt, Tana Sharp, Cheri Mertens, Patricia Franks, Kristin Taylor, Robin Stevens, Jaqueline Hay, Tara Springer, Madison Hodge, and Tonya Edwards Fannin Elementary K-1st, Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, Health, & PE. Phase I of Count Around the Can provided a walking track and riding toys for students at Fannin. Phase II will provide more riding toys and community buildings. This grant helps teach students about socialization, rules, manners, math and much more all while encouraging physical activity. Science on the Road - $750.00 Brittany Lassiter and Meredith Boyde Sam Houston Elementary 4th-5th, Science Sam Houston 4th and 5th grade students will have 4 interactive field trips next year, one each nine weeks, revolving around their science units: Navarro Mills Water Treatment Facility, Athens Freshwater Fisheries, Luminant Coal Mine, and a TXU Arc Demonstration. |
