Sponsored by Glenn & Pat Sodd $2,250 Given to: Debbie Powers & Laura Ackley Campus: Bowie Grade(s): Kindergarten 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Subject(s): All Subjects The grant, Creating a Servant-Leader Culture, would provide teachers and administration with leadership curriculum that will guide direct lessons for all students on proactivity, planning, prioritizing, celebrating the success of others, listening, collaboration, balance, and developing one’s personal talents and voice. By using the curriculum, The Leader in Me and The Seven Habits of Happy Kids, our administration and teachers will focus on and teach students how to implement a different leadership characteristic each month. In addition to this curriculum, each grade level will put their knowledge into practice by planning and participating in a service project. Many schools across the country are now at a 1:1 student/technology ratio.Having a class set of kindle fire tablets in my classroom would allow my instruction to evolve with the country and newest teaching practices. The students we have in our classrooms today are part of a technological generation. Technology is what they know and who they are. It only make sense that adding these beloved devices to classroom instruction would increase engagement and achievement in the classroom. Making Music Matter Given by the Navarro Council of the Arts in Honor of Jane Biltz $1,745 Given to: Jennifer Nash Campus: Collins Intermediate Grade(s): 5th & 6th Subject(s): Music I would like to provide pitched and non-pitched instruments for students to have a stronger appreciation for music. Music changes the shape and power of the brain; furthermore learning to play an instrument improves cognitive skills and can even increase a person's IQ. Playing an instrument can improve day to day actions such as alertness, planning, and emotional perception. Creating a Culture of Readers The Eleanor Thornell English Language Arts Grant $2,000 Given to: Heather McCutchen Campus: Collins Intermedaite Grade(s): 5th & 6th Subject(s): ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him. –Maya Angelou Robotics Club $1,500 Given to: Heather McCutchen Campus: Collins Intermediate Grade(s): 5th & 6th Subject(s): Science, Technology Learning how to code and manipulate robots will help students to gain experience in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. These career fields are growing with the expanding technology fields and providing students experience with the skills needed to excel in these fields early in life will better prepare them when they enter the workforce. Enhancing ESL Student Reading Skills The Eleanor Thornell English Language Arts Grant $815.00 Given to: Holly Scoggins Campus: CMS Grade: 5th Subject(s): English Language Art and Reading With a student body of 910, of which 36% are Limited English Proficient, an English language arts and reading teacher looked at creating new pathways to improve literacy among the ESL learners. Enhancing ESL Student Reading Skills will present them with an ideal opportunity to accomplish this goal. This project seeks to broaden learning past the classroom by providing 5th grade ELAR teachers multiple copies of Spanish editions novels which are read in class. These are to be taken home by ESL students so both students and their families have greater access to Spanish edition novels, enabling both parent and student to partake in the experience at home. Novels were identified by the Scope and Sequence developed by the English department for the current year. Building STEAM in the Library $2,280 Given to: Heather McCutchen Campus: Collins Intermediate Grade(s): 5th & 6th Subject(s): Science, Technology, Mathematics, ELA “Every child has the right to invent, tinker, create, innovate, make, and do.” --Laura Fleming, Library Media Specialist This grant would help to provide students with the opportunity to learn, build, and create in a hands-on way. Students learn best by exploring and manipulating real objects. The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) career fields are growing and by giving students the opportunity to explore these disciplines early in life we excite and prepare them for careers in these fields. Tuesday Book Club Sponsored by Glenn & Pat Sodd $575 Given To: Tammy Casaday Campus: Carroll Grade(s): 3rd Subject(s): ELAR I would like to start a Tuesday Book Club for parents and students to come together for one hour each week and just enjoy reading. I believe if we can get our parents involved in an enjoyable social opportunity to read with their children, that we can promote family literacy. I would like our parents to have the opportunity to be a part of the school and to become part of a learning community. I would like to have many different types of books for us to read and talk about. I would like to have some Spanish versions for our Hispanic parents. The students would be reading in English. We would all have a time to share and talk about the novels.
